Justice of the peace candidates are nominated by party caucus and, if they consent, are added to the ballot for election. 17 V.S.A. § 2413 and 17 V.S.A. § 2385. A justice of the peace administers oaths of office, solemnizes marriages, and sits on their town’s board of civil authority. Through the board of civil authority, justices of the peace assist in elections, maintain registered voter checklists, and hear property tax assessment appeals. 24 V.S.A. § 801.
