If a Flood is Coming

• Put gas in your car/generator and charge your electronic devices, i.e. cellphone

• Shut off the gas, electric & water at the main shut-offs in your home

• Elevate hazardous materials and your valuables

• Open basement windows to allow water to flow through, instead of getting trapped

• Have a Shelter in Place box, as well as a Go-Kit ready in case you are evacuated

During a Flood

• Monitor this page for storm alerts and evacuation instructions.

• Be prepared to evacuate if so instructed

• Stay off the roads unless evacuating!

• Report downed power lines to 911 first, and then Green Mountain Power at (888) 835-4672

After a Flood

• Do not walk through flowing water - drowning is the #1 cause of flood deaths.

• If walking through standing water, use a pole/stick to ensure the ground is still there.

• Do not drive through a flooded area - more people drown in cars than anywhere else.

• Do not drive around flood barriers - the road or bridge may be washed out.

• Stay away from power lines/electrical wires - #2 killer in floods - electric currents travel through water.

• Look before you step - floors/ stairs covered with debris and mud can be very slippery

• Be alert for gas leaks - use a flashlight to inspect damage

• Don’t smoke cigarettes or use candles, lanterns or open flames unless you know the gas is turned off and the area has been ventilated.
